How to equip your home photo studio for prop styling
I’ve been receiving a lot of questions lately about how to get started with prop styling, so I thought I’d share some insights in this blog post. To make it as helpful as possible, I’ll take you on a virtual tour of my home photo studio, showing you the props and equipment I use, and explaining why each piece is essential for creating stunning styled photos.
Lighting: The Key to Beautiful Prop Styling
Lighting is one of the most important elements in prop styling, and here’s how I manage it in my space:
1. Natural Light
I’m fortunate to have three windows in my studio, which allow a lot of natural light to flow in. This natural light is incredibly valuable for creating soft, flattering images, enhancing the elegance of the props I use. I often take advantage of this light during the day to illuminate my setup, making my props look their best.
2. Additional Lighting
On cloudy or rainy days, when natural light is limited, I rely on two light stands to brighten up my props. These lights help mimic natural light as closely as possible, allowing me to adjust the angle and intensity to achieve the desired effect. Balancing natural and additional lighting helps me maintain consistency and quality in my prop styling, regardless of the weather outside.

Reflectors
A reflector is another key tool I use in prop styling. It helps control shadows by bouncing light onto the props, softening harsh shadows, and illuminating areas that might otherwise be dim. By reflecting light, you can achieve a more balanced and flattering look, highlighting the details and textures of your props. I use two reflectors in my studio: a large 72×42-inch one and a smaller 20-inch reflector, both of which I purchased on Amazon.
Essential tools for prop styling
Backdrops
Backdrops are fundamental in prop styling and should be one of the first items you invest in. They provide a clean, consistent background for your props, making it easy to switch up your style or color scheme. For beginners, I recommend starting with one backdrop in a soft, bright neutral color and another in a darker tone or with a pattern. This combination will cover a range of styling needs. I purchased my backdrops on Etsy from InkadnElm. You can visit their store by following this link.
Backdrop Stands
A backdrop stand is also an important element in my photo studio. It allows me to easily hang and secure the photo backdrop or fabric, ensuring it stays smooth and free of wrinkles. Many backdrop stands come with adjustable features, allowing you to customize the height and width to fit various styling projects.

Fabrics, Papers, and More: Adding Texture and Depth
In addition to the main prop styling elements mentioned above, I love using different fabrics to bring softness and flow to my setups. I also incorporate papers, magazines, books, and cards with mood photos and inspiring words to add visual interest and depth. Glasses, cups, and candles are also favorites of mine—they add a touch of elegance and functionality to the styling.
How Do I Add Props to My Collection?
When adding new props to my collection, I focus on choosing pieces that align with my personal style: elegant, soft, airy, and flowy.
Where Do I Buy Props?
I often buy props from SHEIN, Amazon, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and Goodwill.
SHEIN offers affordable options, while Amazon has a wide range of props. If you prefer shopping in person, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and Goodwill are great places to find unique and budget-friendly items.
When shopping, whether online or in-store, keep your style in mind and look for props with materials and colors that fit your vision or the specific project you’re working on.
I hope this guide gives you a good starting point for your prop styling journey!
