Interior Design Photography in Spain

by ArsVie Photo Studio

In a technical sense, interior design photography in Spain is similar to this type of work in other countries. It requires the same core equipment: wide-angle lenses, a tripod, and a thoughtful approach to composition. The goal is always to create a visual story of the space and the real difference is in the atmosphere.

Spain offers a very distinct visual identity. Many interiors here are either deeply rooted in history or inspired by artistic traditions from past centuries. This creates a layered environment where every detail, from textures to light, feels intentional and expressive.

A large number of hotels and boutique spaces in Spain are located within historical buildings. This alone changes everything. The structure, the materials, the height of ceilings, the placement of windows, all of it influences how light moves through the space. And light, in interior design photography, is everything. It goes beyond capturing a room, it’s about capturing the feeling of the space.

What makes interior design photography in Spain unique

What I’ve noticed while working and observing interiors in Spain, as a photographer, is that spaces here often carry a strong sense of identity.

You see:

  • natural materials like stone, wood, and ceramic
  • textured walls that add depth without decoration
  • carefully selected furniture that blends vintage and modern elements
  • a balance between simplicity and detail

All of this creates an environment that is visually rich. From a interior design photographer’s perspective, it means there is always something to work with: light, shadow, contrast, or composition.

What is important in interior design photography in Spain

Light and time of day

Light plays a crucial role in interior design photography anywhere, but in Spain, it becomes even more important. The sunlight here is strong and directional, especially in the southern regions. This creates beautiful contrasts and also requires careful timing. Early morning and late afternoon often provide the most balanced and soft light, while midday light can be more challenging but also more dramatic if used intentionally. Understanding how light enters the space and at what time is key to capturing it at its best.

Working with historical spaces

Historical buildings require a different level of attention. They are not always symmetrical or predictable. Walls may not be perfectly straight, spaces can feel irregular, and every room has its own character. This means you need to spend more time exploring angles and compositions. But that is also where the beauty is. There is always something unexpected to discover: a reflection, a texture, a small detail that adds depth to the image. In many ways, photographing these interior spaces feels less technical and more intuitive.

Creating a visual story

As an interior design photographer in Spain I focus on the atmosphere of a space, beyond its visual appearance. In Spain (Malaga, Marbella, Ronda, Estepona and more), this often means slowing down and observing. Not every shot needs to be wide and descriptive. Sometimes the most powerful images come from details, how light touches a surface, how fabrics fall, how colors interact. This is especially true for boutique hotels, villas, and design-focused spaces, where the experience is built through details.

Interior design photography for hotels, villas, and design spaces

Spain, and especially regions like Costa del Sol (Malaga, Marbella, Estepona, Ronda, Mijas, Sotogrande, Torremolinos), offers a wide range of visually interesting properties, from modern luxury villas to historic boutique hotels.

For businesses, high-quality interior design photography in Spain becomes essential. It is often the first impression for potential clients, on a website, social media, or booking platforms.

Strong imagery helps communicate:

  • the atmosphere of the space
  • the level of design and attention to detail
  • the overall experience a guest can expect

And in a competitive market, that visual impression matters.

Interior design photography in Spain is a balance between technical precision and artistic observation. The equipment remains the same, but the approach shifts. You begin to pay more attention to light, history, and subtle details that define the space. And in the end, the goal is simple – to create images that allow someone to feel the space before they even step into it.

My Process for Interior Design Photography

As an interior design photographer, I follow a detailed, step-by-step process to capture the true beauty and essence of every space. Here’s how I work:

Pre-Shoot Preparation

  • Consulting with the Client: Before the shoot, I take the time to understand the vision, style, and purpose behind the space. Whether it’s for a portfolio, real estate listing, or feature, understanding the goals helps me deliver the best results.
  • Preparing the Space: I work with the client to ensure the space is styled to perfection, with all furnishings in place and any unnecessary clutter removed.

Lighting & Composition

  • Using Natural Light: I start by capturing images using the natural light that flows through windows and doors to create an authentic atmosphere.
  • Adding Supplementary Lighting: If certain areas of the room are too dark, I bring in additional light sources to balance the exposure and emphasize key design details.
  • Framing the Shot: I experiment with different angles to capture both wide shots that showcase the room’s layout and close-ups that highlight key design elements such as textures and furniture.
  • Camera and Lenses: I use a wide-angle lens to capture the full scope of a room, especially large spaces. A tripod ensures stability, while avoiding any distortion in my images.
  • Adjusting White Balance: I ensure the lighting on my photos looks natural and true to the actual colors of the room.

Taking photos

  • Composing the Image: My goal is to frame each shot in a way that highlights the most important features of the space, whether it’s a beautiful piece of furniture or an architectural detail.
  • Creating Depth and Layers: I focus on creating depth in my shots by using foreground and background elements to guide the viewer’s eye through the space.

Post-Processing

  • Editing the Images: Once the shoot is finished, I edit the images in software like Lightroom or Photoshop. This step involves adjusting exposure, contrast, and white balance to bring out the true colors and vibrancy of the space.
  • Retouching: I make sure to remove any distractions, such as dust or small imperfections, that could detract from the design.

Delivering the Images

  • File Formats: I provide my clients with high-resolution images in JPEG, suitable for both print and digital use.
